What is the focus of your professional work?

Katy Blake Burch-Hudson: Foreign policy and global development

Why the focus on international affairs?

Katy Blake Burch-Hudson: As a US citizen studying how different governments interact with each other and with their citizens sheds light on how policies work in different contexts.

What are you working on these days?

Katy Blake Burch-Hudson: Working on finding a job after my program ends in September while finishing up my capstone project for my MSc program. My capstone project is an analysis of the how the hukou (housing registration) points system in China interacts with the specific challenges that Chinese migrant women face.

What made you join the Pacific Council?

Katy Blake Burch-Hudson: I joined the Pacific Council because I wanted to be a part of a community that was interested in engaging in discussions about global affairs and foreign policy

What’s your biggest takeaway?

Katy Blake Burch-Hudson: I have enjoyed the stimulating program of events that keep me engaged in a variety of regional and topical global affairs issues.

Do you recall any particular quotes or stories from any Pacific Council events you attended?

Katy Blake Burch-Hudson: I particularly enjoyed the book club event featuring Samantha Powers' book The Education of an Idealist. It was interesting to connect with other members to hear their experiences and perspectives on Amb. Powers' life and work and then particularly thrilling to hear Amb. Powers speak about the state of our nation and the state of US in the global arena. Her insights regarding how to work towards positive change without becoming disaffected but also remaining realistic were inspiring to me as a young professional looking to work in foreign policy for the US.
